Canada Line
In 2005, SNC-Lavalin was awarded a contract for the engineering, procurement, and construction of an approximately 18 kilometre light rail line with 16 stations linking downtown Vancouver to the Richmond International Airport and Richmond city centre. SNC-Lavalin will own and operate the Canada Line for 35 years.
The Canada Line, which began revenue service in August 2009, improves existing transportation services in British Columbia by connecting with existing light rail lines, bus services, commuter rail, sea bus, and the airport. The line is a fully automated, driverless system that uses rotary-driven, metro-type vehicles. It has eight underground, six elevated, and two at-grade stations, as well as an operations and maintenance centre.
SNC-Lavalin O&M, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, and the Caisse de dépot et placement du Québec won the Infrastructure deal of the Year Award (Americas) for the Canada Line project at the 2006 Project Finance International Awards held in London on January 25, 2005. The Canada Line was also awarded the North American Transport Deal of the Year by Euro Money Project Finance Magazine at a March 7, 2005, ceremony in New York.
