WATERFRONToronto

To enable the achievement of Waterfront Toronto’s key sustainability objectives of energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, a District Energy System was created to serve the Greater Toronto Area communities of the West Don Lands and East Bayfront. Buildings will be heated and cooled through a network of piping buried in local streets. The District Energy System allows access alternative energy and breaks Waterfront Toronto’s dependence on fossil fuels.

The plant is a green-field project designed to support the environmental requirements of the new Corus Entertainment complex situated on Waterfront Toronto’s property. The District Energy System is designed to supply hot and chilled water to an energy transfer station within the new complex. The use of District Energy reduces the environmental footprint of the building when it’s using its boilers and chillers, and improves efficiency through the introduction of alternative sources of energy. As a result of using District Energy, natural gas consumption for heating is expected to fall by approximately 25% and CO2 emissions by approximately 10,000 tons per year.

SNC-Lavalin O&M will maintain the facility on a 24/7 basis. Our firm will help to minimize downtime, avoid forced outages, and optimize the useful life of the plant. As the facility operator, SNC-Lavalin O&M will assume responsibility for maintenance of all equipment, annual inspections, and regulatory compliance.
